A sealant is a thin plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars) to protect them from decay by keeping germs and food particles out of these grooves. The quick and painless process involves placing a special gel on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth for a few seconds. The teeth are then washed and dried and then the sealant is placed on the teeth. At this point, the dentist or dental hygienist may shine a special light on the surface of the teeth for about a minute to help harden the sealant. Sealants can last up to five to ten years and can save you the time, money and discomfort associated with tooth decay.
